Ashes 2023: Five Key Takeaways From the Series

The 133rd edition of the Ashes series between England and Australia came to an end and both teams finished the series at a draw. Australia started with two consecutive wins, England bounced back in the third Test and in the fifth Test, destroyed the plans of the visitors.

The fourth Test between the two teams ended up in a draw and hence the whole series ended up at 2-2. Cricket betting sites covered Ashes extensively on their respective platforms.

This year’s Ashes was one of the most thrilling competitions and the Bazball was the main talking point. Both England and Australia were highly competitive and all the contests were always closely fought. Every player desired to win and their pride in playing cricket for their respective teams was evident in every game, which contributes to the series' intense nature.

Here is a list of 5 takeaways from the series between the two giants of Test cricket.

1) David Warner is at the end of his Test Career

Warner is renowned for his aggressive approach to batting. He likes to take the attack to the opposition right from the start, putting pressure on the bowlers and setting the tone for the innings. He is particularly strong against fast bowlers and often dominates them with powerful shots.

In the past, it has been noticed that Warner's batting average in Test cricket was above 45, which is considered quite impressive for an opening batsman but now things have completely changed. He has been a complete flop for Australia. Warner has failed to give his team a stable start in every match. In 10 innings during the Ashes 2023, his average was 28.5 which is a bit low for a Warner in international cricket.

2) Usman Khawaja’s consistency

Usman Khawaja has displayed his class and talent on numerous occasions, scoring some significant centuries and contributing crucial innings for Australia. He can anchor the innings and build big scores when in form.

While coming for Ashes 2023, Australia already had high expectations from Khawaja and he has proved himself worthy for the team again. Khawaja scored 496 runs in five Tests at an average of 49.6 and his innings included three fifties and a century.

3) Joe Root is Underrated as an allrounder

Root's batting technique is regarded as one of the best among modern-day batsmen. He possesses a solid defense and is known for playing with a straight bat, making him effective in both attack and defense.

However, Ben Stokes has discovered a new player in Root who is a skilled allrounder and Root’s performance in Ashes 2023 is proof of that. Whenever Stokes asked him to perform, Root did his best in every aspect of the game. Root’s bowling was tight and he delivered six wickets at an average of 28.66 during the series.

4) Bazeball is still Alive but has a lot of things to prove

When England witnessed an embarrassing Ashes 2021-22, a lot of things were changed in the camp and Bazball came into existence as Brendon McCullum (whose nickname is Baz) became the new head coach of England’s Test cricket. Bazball is characterized by an aggressive and attacking style of play, with a focus on scoring runs quickly and taking wickets.

While the team came for Ashes 2023, there were high expectations from Bazball, but two consecutive losses, in the beginning, have changed the perspective. The question remains whether Bazball is right for England’s Test cricket or not because they haven't won the most prestigious series.

5) Laws of Cricket are more important

The biggest takeaway from the Ashes 2023 was that the laws of cricket are more important than the ‘Spirit’ of Cricket. There were many incidents where the spirit of cricket was questioned but according to the laws of cricket, the decision was right.

Bairstow’s runout by Alex Carey was one of the highlights of the tournament but according to the laws of cricket, it was the right decision.
