It is likely that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will introduce ‘Impact Players' when the Indian Premier League (IPL 2023) gets underway next year.
This rule has already been implemented in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that ended last month. According to this rule, the teams are allowed to make tactical substitutions in the middle of a match.
After successfully implementing the rule, the BCCI has decided to consider the Impact Player for the marquee tournament, scheduled for early April next year.
At the time of toss, teams must also mention four substitutes or Impact players along with their starting XI. It is possible to use one of them during the match. Until the end of the 14th over in either inning, players may replace any member of the starting XI and bat and bowl their full allotment.
“With the ever-growing popularity of T20 cricket, it is imperative that we look at introducing new dimensions which will make this format more attractive and interesting not only for our viewers but also the participating teams from a strategic viewpoint,” the Hindu had quoted BCCI as saying in a statement to the state units earlier this year.
“The BCCI would like to introduce the concept of ‘Impact Player’ wherein participating teams could replace one member of its playing XI during a T20 match based on the context of the game,” the statement said.
BCCI announced that a total of 991 players have registered for IPL 2023
714 Indian players registered for the upcoming season of the lucrative league before the registration deadline on November 30th.
