Hugh Edmeades confirmed as auctioneer for IPL 2023 mini auction

Hugh Edmeades is all set to return as auctioneer for IPL 2023, which will take place on December 23 in Kochi. In 2018, Edmeades succeeded Richard Madley as host of the IPL auction.

In February 2022, during the IPL 2022 mega auction, he collapsed from postural hypotension. Charu Sharma stepped in for Edmeades while the medical team attended to him while the auction was halted following the unfortunate incident.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office bearers asked Charu Sharma to act on his behalf while the medical team attended to Edmeades.

When Edmeades returned to lead the final phase of the auction, members of all franchises and BCCI officials applauded loudly.

Hugh Edmeades thrilled to be back as an IPL 2023 auctioneer

Nevertheless, there was doubt about whether he would be reappointed as auctioneer. It was announced Tuesday that Edmeades will run the cash-rich auction for the upcoming season, and he will travel to Kochi via Dubai.

I am thrilled to have been asked by the BCCI to conduct the 2023 IPL auction and am excited about visiting Kochi for the first time,” Hugh Edmeades told Sportstar.

In 2016, Edmeades went independent after 38 years of working for Christie's auction house. He specializes in fine art, classic cars, and charity auctions.

The IPL auction in Jaipur, which Edmeades attended in December 2018, was a new experience for him. Despite conducting more than 2,500 auctions around the world by then, it was his first stint with Indian cricket.

Last year, Hugh Edmeades revealed that skipping meals was “dumb” on his side because it could have been one of the factors that led to low blood pressure.

But the seasoned auctioneer, not one to linger on the past, is anticipating a “interesting” auction in Kochi with 10 franchises going all out to make some wise purchases.
