ICC Men’s World Cup 2023: BCCI shortlists 20 players for mega event

Twenty players have reportedly been selected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the ICC Men's World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to take place in India later this year.

According to a report, at the board's annual general meeting last week, the decision was taken with the intention of assembling a potent 15-man squad for the biggest championship in cricket.

The BCCI is planning to rotate the squad throughout the year ahead of the World Cup to choose the final 15 for the extravaganza. This decision has been backed by coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma.

After nearly four hours of brainstorming in a Mumbai hotel, NCA head VVS Laxman and chief selector Chetan Sharma developed the list of players. Video conferencing was used by BCCI president Roger Binny to attend the meeting.

Fitness parameters & workload management were also part of the meeting

β€œIt was a very constructive and fruitful meeting where we reviewed the past performance and planned for future events, including World Cup and World Test Championship (WTC). We will give preference for international cricket while making sure the IPL is not diluted,” the report quoted a source from BCCI as saying.

β€œKeeping in mind the Men’s FTP and preparations for ICC CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the IPL Franchisee to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the IPL 2023,” the BCCI said in a media release on Sunday.

β€œThe emerging players will have to play a substantial domestic season to be eligible for selection to the national team,” it added.
