Is betting illegal in India?

Betting is illegal when it is carried out inside India. That is according to the Public Gambling Act of 1867 that specifies gambling houses, gambling dens, or other such physical establishments inside India. There is nothing in the law that makes betting online illegal, though, and this is why betting on different betting websites may not be illegal at all.

The reason why the law does not make a mention of online websites is that the internet did not exist in 1867. No one could have fathomed that in a century or so we would have progressed so much. Now, this is permission by omission and that can be a bit tricky under the stern eye of the law but this is the loophole that is currently being used by all the major bookmakers to offer their services in India.

We are talking about names such as Dafabet, Bet365, and Casumo. All global behemoths with stellar reputations of providing a safe and regulated betting environment for their customers. These are not companies to take a risk and get on the wrong side of the law.

Is betting illegal in India? While physical betting parlors or establishments are illegal, online betting appears to be outside the scope of the current law.
