Jaydev Unadkat recalled to Test side: Let’s have look at other players who made comeback after long gap

Earlier this week, left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat was recalled to the Indian Test team for the upcoming series against Bangladesh, which begins on December 14 in Chattogram.

The new Indian team for the two-match Test series against the Bangla Tigers now includes the 31-year-old. The seasoned seamer has received praise for his outstanding recent domestic cricket exploits. And he has deservedly made his comeback to Team India.

Jaydev Unadkat made his Test debut in December 2010

Jaydev Unadkat had waited a long time for his Test comeback. In December 2010, he made his long-form debut against South Africa in Centurion. Despite playing seven ODIs and 10 T20Is, he didn't feature in any Test match since his debut.

If he participates in one of the two games against Bangladesh, he will set a new mark for the longest time between an Indian player's appearance in two Tests. You can find the best bookmakers in India here.

We look back at three previous instances of Team Indian cricketers making a comeback after a long duration:

Dinesh Karthik

At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik made his Test debut against Australia in November 2004. Similar to white-ball cricket, he was often in and out of the Test squad and was never able to truly establish his spot in the team.

He was in and out of the Test team for few years. Over eight years, starting in January 2010, passed before he participated in a Test match for India. He made a surprise comeback in June 2018 when he featured in a Test match against Afghanistan.

Parthiv Patel

Like Karthik, Parthiv Patel also played two Test matches in a gap of eight years. The consistency of MS Dhoni for sure kept both the duo out of the Indian Test squad. The left-handed wicketkeeper batter made a Test debut at the age of 17 years, making him Test cricket's youngest wicketkeeper.

He was inconsistent behind the wickets but selectors still gave him enough chances.

However, he ran out of his luck. Wriddhiman Saha succeeded Dhoni following his surprise retirement from Test cricket in 2014. Another lifeline came Patel's way when Saha was injured. In November 2016, he played his first Test since August 2008 against England in Mohali.
