The 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will be the 13th edition of the Cricket World Cup, a quadrennial One Day International (ODI) cricket tournament contested by the men's national teams of the International Cricket Council (ICC). It will be held in India from 5th October to 19th November 2023.
The tournament will feature 10 teams, divided into two groups of five. Each team will play each other team in their group once, with the top four teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals. The final will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The 2023 Cricket World Cup is expected to be a closely contested tournament, with several teams capable of winning. In this article, we have compiled a list of 5 players who will be in the spotlight during the tournament.
1) Shaheen Afridi – Pakistan
Shaheen Afridi is officially the most lethal bowler in ODI cricket and he is making headlines with his pace and accuracy in every match. One of Afridi's standout attributes is his ability to swing the ball both ways, a skill that keeps batsmen on their toes. Whether it's the early inswinger to the right-handers or the late outswinger, he can trouble batsmen with his deceptive movement.
Afridi is one of the primary reasons why Pakistan has become the number 1 team in the ICC ODI rankings. In 2023, Afridi has been part of 10 ODIs and he has picked up 21 wickets at an economy of 4.93.
2) Cameron Green – Australia
Cameron Green is a rising star in the world of Australian cricket. Standing at an impressive height of 6 feet 7 inches, Green's towering presence on the field is hard to ignore. He is primarily a right-handed batsman, and his batting style is characterized by elegance and power.
However, what truly sets Green apart is his prowess as a bowler. He is a right-arm fast-medium bowler who generates impressive pace and bounce, making him a genuine wicket-taking option.
3) Ben Stokes – England
Renowned for his fearless approach, Stokes is known to play explosive innings and rescue his team from precarious situations. The reason why he will be in the spotlight this year is that he is making a comeback to the ODI format after a year.
Stokes announced his retirement from the ODI format in July 2022 but because England needed him, he has reversed his retirement and will be available to play in the ODI World Cup.
4) Virat Kohli – India
For more than a decade Virat Kohli has been the center point for team India’s batting lineup. Without a doubt, Virat will be playing a crucial role with his bat for team India in the upcoming tournament.
Kohli has been part of 12 ODIs in 2023 and he has scored 431 runs at an average of 47.88 and a strike rate of 114.93. At number 3, Virat provides much-needed stability to team India and can turn things around in any situation.
5) Babar Azam – Pakistan
Pakistan’s skipper has become a major force in ODI cricket in 2023. He has quickly risen through the ranks to establish himself as one of the most consistent and stylish batsmen in modern cricket. What sets Babar Azam apart is his ability to adapt to different formats of the game seamlessly. He is equally comfortable in Test cricket, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20s (T20s).
His adaptability and composure under pressure have earned him accolades as Pakistan's captain and a leader in the team. In the 2023 season of the ODI, Babar has been part of 14 matches and stands at 706 runs at an average of 54.30 and a strike rate of 86.83.
