Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings is up next on the IPL schedule and this is a contest that has had some great matches in the past. Punjab Kings continued their tradition of nail-biting finishes but ended up on the winning side in the previous match. Chennai Super Kings were completely demolished by the Delhi Capitals and are going to have to make some changes in their team pretty quickly. Mumbai has been a very high-scoring ground so far and that could be in favor of the Punjab Kings with their stronger batting lineup.
Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings IPL 2021
Teams’ strengths & weaknesses
Punjab Kings have a very strong batting lineup that is suited to high-scoring venues. They have a lot of power at all stages of the inning and players like Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, or Deepak Hooda can really take the attack to the Chennai spinners. The bowling attack of Punjab is a concern. We think there are a lot of holes that need to be plugged and even the addition of Riley Meredith or Jhye Richardson did not have the impact expected in the previous match.
Chennai Super Kings are playing a brand of cricket that is a bit outdated. Suresh Raina and Sam Curran played pretty well against DC but overall, the batting looked underpowered. MS Dhoni is under tremendous pressure to show that his ways are still relevant in this new age of T20 cricket. Also, Chennai is going to be without Lungi Ngidi and Jason Behrendorff for this match and so the bowling is not at its strongest either.
Players in form
KL Rahul loves batting at the Wankhede. He has three ninety-plus scores and one century in his previous four matches here. That is a phenomenal record to have and he could continue in the same vein. Chris Gayle also showed glimpses of his best in the previous match and is going to be one to watch out for.
Suresh Raina made a tremendous return to the IPL after a year away. He smashed four sixes in his inning and played fearlessly. His role is going to be as important as ever in a Chennai team that is a bit short on batting power. Similarly, Sam Curran is also in great batting form and could be used up the order to accelerate the scoring like in the previous season.
Mumbai has been all about scoring runs and the dominance of the batsmen. It is very difficult for the bowlers to get away with decent figures and the only way to do that is to take wickets in the powerplay. Other than that, the batsmen are the ones that will enjoy the conditions once again.
- 91,91,100*, and 94 are the previous four scores of KL Rahul at the Wankhede
- Chennai Super Kings have won 15 out of the 24 matches played against Punjab Kings. This also includes four wins out of the most recent five matches.
- Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, and Faf du Plessis have the most runs of any batsmen in matches played between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings
Everything seems to be stacked against Chennai Super Kings at the moment. It is playing a powerful batting lineup in conditions where its own bowlers are perhaps the weakest. The shift out of Chennai hurt CSK in the previous season and it looks like that will be the case once more. Punjab Kings also has a weak bowling lineup but its batting firepower is never-ending and it already has one win under its belt.
Winner: Punjab Kings (1.83)
