Ruturaj Gaikwad smashes List A record with seven sixes in 43-run over

As Maharashtra took on Uttar Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-final in Ahmedabad, Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed a List-A record as he hit seven sixes in an over. The penultimate over in Maharashtra's innings ended with the scoreboard showing 315 for 5 from 272 for 5.

The combined effort of Brett Hampton and Joe Carter off Willem Ludick for Northern Districts against Central Districts in a Ford Trophy game in 2018 resulted in 43 runs from the over, which also entered the record records.

After Tamil Nadu's opener Narayan Jagadeesan, who had struck 277 against Arunachal Pradesh, Gaikwad smashed the second double hundred of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 season. The CSK opener continued to carry his bat throughout the innings, scoring 220 off 159 balls while hitting 16 sixes and 10 fours.

The young batter joined Rohit Sharma as the only other Indian batsman to hit 16 sixes in a List A innings. In an ODI match against Sri Lanka, when Rohit scored 264, he achieved the feat.

Gaikwad reached his double hundred by the time he hit his sixth six in the 49th over against right-arm spinner Shiva Singh of UP. The star opener now has 987 runs at an average of 197.5 in 8 innings.

His run of scores includes 136, 154 not out, 124, 21, 168, 124 not out, 40, and 220 not out in the last eight innings. He also has a fantastic strike rate of 115. 6.

Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri both achieved 36 runs in an over in a first-class match, but there are other instances of much higher totals. One of the biggest is 77 conceded by Wellington's Bert Vance against Canterbury in a Shell Trophy match in February 1990.
