The Ups and Downs of Indian Cricket in 2023

The year 2023 was a mix of triumphs and heartbreaks for the Indian cricket team. They excelled in bilateral series, retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and won the Asia Cup, but fell short in global events.

Virat Kohli's resurgence, India's strong performance in the ICC World Cup, and their overall schedule and fixtures marked the year.

The team's performance in the World Cup, where they won ten consecutive matches before losing to Australia in the final, was particularly noteworthy. Despite the loss, the team's ability to handle pressure situations was commendable and earned praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As the year comes to an end, we list down the Ups and Downs that Team India faced in the year 2023.

Resurgence of Virat Kohli

For Indian cricket fans, 2023 witnessed the glorious return of a fallen king. Virat Kohli, the once-undisputed batting maestro, silenced his doubters with a thunderous resurgence, reclaiming his throne as one of the world's best batsmen.

Kohli's struggles in 2020 and 2021 have been well-documented. A prolonged form slump, coupled with the immense pressure of captaincy, seemed to have dimmed his fiery batting spirit. However, 2023 marked a paradigm shift. A mental and technical recalibration saw Kohli shedding the burden of captaincy and rediscovering his batting mojo.

The Asia Cup in Sri Lanka became his personal redemption ground. In just 3 innings, Virat Kohli scored 129 runs at an average of 64.50 and a strike rate of 114.15. His highest score of 122 runs came against India’s arch-rivals Pakistan which helped team India to dominate the tournament.

The World Cup on home soil witnessed Kohli reach another level of dominance. His hunger for runs was palpable, and he treated every match as a personal crusade. Kohli became the highest scorer in the tournament with 765 runs in 11 innings at an average of 95.62 and a strike rate of 90.31.

His magnificent 82 in the semifinal against arch-rivals New Zealand was a masterclass in composure and power, guiding India to a thrilling victory.

Disappointing end to the World Cup 2023

The elation of reaching the World Cup final on home soil quickly turned into an agonizing gut punch. Australia, led by a resurgent Pat Cummins, outclassed India in all aspects of the game.

The middle-order's vulnerability once again exposed and the bowling attack lacking its usual bite, the Men in Blue faltered on the biggest stage, leaving fans distraught and yearning for victory. After dominating the whole tournament, team India came out as a vulnerable squad in the final game and the whole hard work of the players went in vain.

Emergence of Young Blood

2023 witnessed a refreshing surge of young talent in Indian cricket. Like vibrant buds bursting through fertile soil, players like Arshdeep Singh, Ishan Kishan, and Shubman Gill blossomed on the big stage. Singh's swing bowling mastery, reminiscent of a young Zaheer Khan, rattled seasoned batsmen.

Kishan's fearless six-hitting sent crowds into raptures, while Gill's elegant strokeplay offered glimpses of a future batting mainstay. These youngsters weren't afraid to dream big. They embraced pressure, delivering match-winning performances with unwavering confidence.

Their energy and exuberance injected a new dynamism into Team India, proving that the future of Indian cricket is in safe hands.

World Test Championship Failure

Despite flashes of brilliance from individual players, India's Test cricket fortunes remained inconsistent. The inability to convert promising situations into victories, particularly overseas, plagued the team throughout the year.

For the second consecutive time in the history of the World Test Championship, team India reached the final but ended up losing the finals against Australia. A golden opportunity to lift the WTC trophy ended up in a similar way as the first one for team India.
