Sports betting is illegal in India (although online betting falls under a gray area and may not be technically illegal) according to the Public Gambling Act of 1867 brought in during British rule. It is staggering to think that a country like India that has changed beyond recognition since 1867 still has a major law from that time applying to its entire country.
While some states have modified the law and allowed casinos or lotteries to function, sports betting remains illegal in the vast majority of the country. This has not stopped the illegal betting market that has thrived in India and this is why there have been some proposals to make it illegal to bet on sports in India. When will sports betting be legal in India?
That is a question that we will attempt to answer right now.
When will sports betting be legal in India?
It is difficult to answer this question with any specific date because things don't just move as per plan in India, however, we do think that sports betting is going to be legal in India sooner rather than later. There are a number of reasons why.
We already have a huge number of people playing fantasy-based games which are close to online betting even if the courts say there is a difference. Secondly, the Supreme Court of India has directed the government to look at ways to make sports gambling legal so that the scourge of illegal gambling rackets can be stopped. Finally, the amount of money that the government stands to make from tax revenues is just mind-boggling and something that cannot be ignored over the long term.
When will sports betting be legal in India? It may be much sooner than you think although the decision is going to be a politically charged one and therein lies the biggest risk of delay.
